Problem with RS482: Screen gray with lines

Hello,

I'm having a problem starting the X server. I'm not even 100% sure if the issue isn't hardware related but at this point I don't think so. The main problem is when running "startx" I get an overall grey screen with some colored lines (about 30?) and nothing else. Please see the attached "screenshot" for details. It's seems that the X server is crashing and falling back to the console because typing "reboot" blindly when having the grey screen really does a system reboot. The funny thing is that nothing gets logged when running "startx" so I can't really trace the problem. 
In contrast to this when I run "Xorg -retro" everything works fine, I can sometimes even Ctrl+Alt+F1 to a console without getting the grey screen again. When I try to run "Xorg -configure" all it does is flicker about two times and then completely freeze the system with a black screen and a not even blinking cursor. 

I'm running Kernel 2.6.33.2 with CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y and CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=y. I compiled the newest (6.13.0) ati driver. 

I attached a Xorg logfile and a "screenshot" showing the grey screen.
