Which kernel?
Which gfxchip?
Which video driver version?
Are you providing any video instruction via cmdline (vga=, video=, gfxmode=)?
> I use
> /usr/bin/xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode 800x600 --panning 1536x1024
When? As server initializes? After WM loads? Which WM?
Why 3:2? Virtually every other wider than tall aspect ratio anyone else
employs is 21:9, 16:9, 8:5, 4:3 or 5:4?

What modes does your video BIOS support?
What modes does your display support?
What is your display's native mode?
Maybe using a ratio ever before encountered would produce an expected result?
