Xorg - linx mint cinnamon using a lot of memory

hope im not killing anyone with this question

i have linux mint 16 installed x86_64.

ATI card on a thinkpad edge laptop.

the longer im on it the more memory xorg chews..

it starts to swap..  im not sure what debugging, if any, I can do.

i used linux-amd-catalyst-14.6-beta-v1.0-may23.zip from the ATI site
because the default drivers dont work with my graphics card
