Backing Store not working in 8 Bit color depth with vesa driver

I posted to this list earlier about not getting color in 8 bit depth
using the intel driver. After some assistance I was able to get 8 bit
color to show in color. However, now the backing store does not seem
to work, so the application I am attempting to run leaves blank areas
on the display whenever a menu or other window covers that area.
xdpyinfo does report that the backing store is on.
I am currently using an Nvidia GeForce card for graphics, though I
have verified that the embedded intel card does work properly with the
vesa driver. The vesa driver was not originally working until I set
the nomodeset kernel option.

Output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log piped through grep for (EE) and (WW):
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
[233314.318] (WW) Hotplugging is on, devices using drivers 'kbd',
'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled.

[233314.639] (WW) VESA(0): Option "NoAccel" is not used
[233314.639] (WW) VESA(0): Option "FlatPanel" is not used
I also verified that the log has that backing store enabled:
[233314.622] (**) VESA(0): Option "BackingStore" "true"
[233314.622] (++) VESA(0): Backing store enabled
This is the same problem I was running into using Xephyr for running
this application. I can get 8 bit color to work properly, however the
backing store option is ignored or doesn't work.
Does anyone have any ideas?
