IIRC, old Matrox cards with their original BIOS need a BIOS upgrade in order
to support any widescreen modes, but it may be that even that doesn't help. I
just booted a G400 (with newest BIOS I ever could find) that has no
widescreen display to connect to. I see no wide modes in Xorg.0.log, but its
display has no DDC or EDID to tell the driver what it wants either.
