Bizarro. I did run "make distcheck" on my machine successfully. I'll try
again now. Thanks for the reports.

PS. It's possible that between running "make distcheck" succesfully and
running the release.sh script I also did "make clean" and then just
"make dist" rather than "make distcheck". But it would obviously be a
bug if that made any difference.
