It wouldn't be a big issue if we switched to frequent release
schedule, similar to the Linux kernel.

It has downsides, too, but overall it proved to require
less maintenance for downstream distributors while at the
same time delivering new features quickly to the users.

In this model, disruptive refactorings would have to live
off-tree (or in branches) until they get mature enough for
general consumption.  Needless to say, git supports this
model really well :-)
