Hibernation (to disk) is fine. Suspend (to memory) is the problem.

Without explicitly trying it that way, I'll say yes, I can suspend
successfully without X.  That is, I can suspend with X at the moment,
but upon restore the X display is corrupted, whereas the virtual
consoles work fine.

The kernel version was 2.6.22 (Debian 2.6.22-3).  However when I tried
to go back to those versions, I couldn't repeat the successful suspend.
