The nvidia driver may have their own set of quirk handlers.

you can feed your xorg log through edid-decode:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/edid-decode/
to see the details of your edid.  The source is pretty simple so you
should be able to see how it works if you are interested.  grab an
xorg log using both dvi and vga to compare if the edids are different.
