Hardware scalers and aspect ratio (Intel)

I've a widescreen laptop (1280x800) with all the Intel RandR goodness.

One downside is that certain games prefer non-widescreen fullscreen
modes, and, e.g., 1024x768 stretched to 1280x800 results in a squished
picture that's not fun at all to look at.  Is it possible to convince
the Intel driver to program the hardware scaler so that it preserves the
aspect ratio and leaves black bands on the sides of the screen?
