Greetings.

I've done some more ( limited, admittedly ) testing of the latest and
greatest:

xserver-1.2.99.903
xf86-video-intel-1.9.93

Both were built by Gentoo's portage - some kind soul has added them :)

I'm now able to start the server with EXA enabled. Great :)

I can run xcompmgr, and it works, but ... well it's actually slower than
XAA. Is this to be expected? I'm on an I845G with a whopping 8MB of
shared memory. It's quite possible that I'm asking too much ...

Anyway, I have a reproducible crash with EXA enabled, when starting
applications ( well, AN application: thunderbird ... I haven't tried too
much else ). First I tried starting thunderbird with xcompmgr running:

Error in I830WaitLpRing(), now is -1758260792, start is -1758262793
pgetbl_ctl: 0x2ffe0001 pgetbl_err: 0x0

Fatal server error:
lockup

(EE) intel(0): I830 Vblank Pipe Setup Failed 0
(EE) intel(0): I830 Vblank Pipe Setup Failed 0

Then I rebooted, and tried WITHOUT xcompmgr running:

Error in I830WaitLpRing(), now is -1758103316, start is -1758105317
pgetbl_ctl: 0x2ffe0001 pgetbl_err: 0x0

Fatal server error:

(EE) intel(0): I830 Vblank Pipe Setup Failed 0
(EE) intel(0): I830 Vblank Pipe Setup Failed 0

Then I rebooted and disabled EXA, and I can start thunderbird :)

OK. Next I thought I'd try Enlightenment with the XRENDER engine. I
enabled EXA again ( it's pretty clear what I'm interested in at this
point, isn't it ), and started X.

At this point, one thing that I DID notice is that ( even with
Enlightenment's software renderer ), things seemed a LOT faster. The
ibar ( icon bar ), for example, scrolled a lot faster and more smoothly.
Great :) Then I told Enlightenment to switch to it's XRENDER backend,
and X crashed again:

Error in I830WaitLpRing(), now is -1757357192, start is -1757359193
pgetbl_ctl: 0x2ffe0001 pgetbl_err: 0x0

space: 130904 wanted 131064

Fatal server error:

(EE) intel(0): I830 Vblank Pipe Setup Failed 0
(EE) intel(0): I830 Vblank Pipe Setup Failed 0

I've attached the last full X log from the last crash ( ie when
switching E17 to use XRENDER ). I can provide more info, do more testing
if required. I'll stay on these drivers for now anyway - they seem to be
far more stable ( with EXA disabled ) than the last version. Good work
on tracking that down :)

Lastly, DRI is working again ( wasn't in the last release ).

Thanks :)

Dan
