Very strange issue with Intel 965GM (x3100) not passing correct res to windows managers

I'm not sure if anyone has looked at this but there is a very strange
issue with the Intel 965GM graphics card. I have a Lenovo T61 with a
1400x900 lcd screen and while it will display 1400x900 the windows
manger will not go bigger than 1024x768. You have to see the pictures
to really under stand it. I filed a bugzilla here:

Funny thing is Dell is now offering Laptops with 965GM (x3100) and I
would assume they are not seeing this (or they just have not tested
it):

Anyone have any ideas on how to even start to debug this if no one is
working it.
