Actually, I've been doing just that:

	http://math.berkeley.edu/~vojta/xf86-input-synaptics-0.99.1.tar.bz2

This does not yet support the Linux input layer (kernel version 2.6), but
I've been using it under Linux 2.4 for some time now. It also lacks many
of the features of the other Synaptics driver.

Advantages are: Quicker response to tap-to-click, does not use shared memory
for configuration (uses an extension instead), and only one author :-).

Are people interested in this driver instead? If so, then I would like
to have until the end of August to bring it closer to completion,
but after that I'm willing to allow anyone to patch it -- once classes start
at Berkeley I won't have any more time to work on it.
