You get the same problem with DACs, a DAC maybe a VGA connector or it
may be just the analog portion of a DVI connector..

We don't have enough info on all cards to know this,

Really the big problem with 1.2 is that it doesn't specify what an
output is, is it a DAC or TMDS or is it a connector, VGA or DVI.

Currently Intel does VGA/TMDS (mixes connectors and output type), nv
does DAC/SOR (just output types), and radeon does connectors
(VGA/DVI),

Really that needs to be cleaned up.... Intel hardware rarely ships
with DVI-I connectors (execpt for Mac Minis...)
