What version of freetype do you have installed? You will want to have
freetype-2.1.x instead of freetype-2.2.x unless you want to haggle
with a bunch of patches like the one you found. Certainly Xorg-6.9.0
does not have the necessary fixes to work with freetype-2.2.x.
