Synaptics driver not loading properly.

Just to answer my own query it appears the .la file /is/ important after
all. For some reason the synaptics package does not create one but the
hacked up version I just created appears to work well, I'll see if I can
contact the author of synaptics as he does not use autotools and
therefore I'm not sure how a .la file is created....
