Well, you're using the 1.7.2 version of the Intel driver, so you'll be 
at the mercy of your video BIOS as far as mode setting is concerned.

What's weird is that a 1024x768 mode seems to be in your available mode 
list, but isn't being made available somehow.

So you could either try using something like i915resolution to reprogram 
your 1024x768 mode into something that might work on your LCD or you 
could upgrade to a newer Intel driver that will program the mode 
natively, as well as controlling all the video outputs on your machine 
dynamically...
