About removing libc wrapper

Has any vendor ever produced an interesting closed binary driver
that didn't have an associated kernel module?   (I'm only familiar
with the ones from ATI & nVidia, which both do.)

I'm all for making it easier to support BSD & Solaris, but does this
really do that?
