Hm, yeah it might.  The driver in CentOS 5 depends on the video BIOS to 
setup outputs and modes.  It sounds like yours doesn't support the 
config you want.  The newer driver programs this stuff directly, so 
it's a lot more flexible, but like you say it depends on some new code 
in the server.
