color calibration and xvideo (xv)

It is actually quite simple, though probably off-topic on this list...
I'll try to be brief:


1) Install "argyll"  (http://www.argyllcms.com/) - I used version 0.7b4.

2) Get a suitable colorimeter: argyll presently supports 
   essentially the two kinds of hardware (Monaco Optix X-Rite DTP94 
   and ColorVision Spyder II) for which the corresponding USB protocol 
   is known.   I used the DTP94.

3) Create the color profile by running "dispcal"
   (http://www.argyllcms.com/doc/dispcal.html)

   I used the command 

      dispcal  -v -yl -gs t40p # verbose, LCD, sRGB color space

   which resulted in a "t40p.cal" file. In my case this took about 30 minutes,
   during which many different color patches were shown on the screen, 
   and the colorimeter was attached to the screen to do its measurements.

4) Copy the *.cal file to /usr/share/color/cal/

5) Edit /etc/gdm/Init/Default . Specifically, add at the beginning

      # set display calibration
      /usr/local/bin/dispwin /usr/share/color/cal/t40p.cal

   This automatically loads the color profile whenever GDM is started.
   

That's it!  The best thing is that once "dispwin" has loaded the color
profile, all X11 programs are automatically calibrated, there is no
need to used special calibration-aware programs.
