In /etc/X11/xorg.conf find the appropriate screen section ...

Look for something like the following :

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen name"
    Device "Some device name"
    Monitor "Some monitor name"
    DefaultDepth 24

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1280x800" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
        Virtual 1600 1200
    EndSubsection
EndSection

The "Virtual" line is the one of interest - change the numbers to something bigger than the resoltion (Mode). Restart
X and you should have your giant desktop.
