No further config modifications were necessary.  It ends as it began: with an update.
After just updating (emerge -u --deep world) with another xgloverlay I have direct rendering 
back. 
It is by far not that fast as it was once before the whole story (this topic) began (glxgears now 
~ 350 ; before: ~ 600...700) 
but at least direct rendering says: YES. 
I fear the next update  but on the other hand: maybe it will get faster again.
