For further info, starting just the PCI card with DRI also causes the
computer to lock up (although not a hard lock, X just seems to be stuck in
an infinite loop). This at the end of the log multiple times:
"(**) RADEON(0): Idle timed out: 64 entries, stat=0x80010140
(EE) RADEON(0): Idle timed out, resetting engine...
(**) RADEON(0): EngineRestore (16/16)"
