Question about Xorg 7.1 and the synaptics touch pad driver

It looks like Xorg 7.1 no longer loads .o driver files (where is this
change documented, by the way?). I'm running Fedora Core 5 and it
only has /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/synaptics_drv.o, not the
necessary .so file. Where can I find synaptics_drv.so?  I tried building
the synaptics driver from the 0.14.6 version on
http://web.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad (which is the latest) but it
only builds the .o file. Thanks for your help.
