well, with Composite, all of the stacking semantics are
application-defined, so you can implement anything you want purely as
conventions between the application, window manager and compositing
manager.

What we're dealing with here is a bootstrap issue -- we need some way to
paint the composting manager output (which, by definition isn't
Redirected) without accidentally clipping it to invisible manual update
windows.
