Dan:

For the closed source proprietary NVIDIA driver, you may ultimately go 
thru the SUN channels.
I have had issues getting 2nd head to work in various configs.

First thing to try is lowering chosen resolutions for all ports in 
xorg.conf.  Start with 640x480 only,
if that works, bump it up.  I think you should be able to mix differing 
res's, but at some point it breaks down.
ie 1600x1200 vs 800x600.

let me know what comes up.
