It's probably the cleanest path and the thing we should have in the medium 
term. I doubt it's the fastest path to fix the biggest performance problems 
with Render in the short term.

We've done a fast software implementation with a weeks work, and there is not 
much missing to make it really run.

If the hooks are easy, I'd be surprised if NVidia/ATI would not pick them up. 
They have done quite some work in the past, and the Render acceleration that 
is in the commercial Nvidia driver now is promising.
