Even today there are many users without broadband access.

In our disitbution we also use them to optimize the build process, since 
some sub package do not need to deflate the wohle big tree, but just 
parts of it (e.g. just the part carrying the kernel modules, or needed 
to build (x)vnc, and so on ...).

The big file does not give you any advantage over the singles ones, 
where the singles ones have multiple.
