I suspect the underscore made it search only for GL, lemme try again.
Humm, putting single quotes around it didn't effect it.
However, if I lose the grep, I can pick this out of the result:

GL_RENDERER   = Mesa DRI R200 20030328 AGP 1x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE TCL
GL_VERSION    = 1.3 Mesa 6.1
GL_VENDOR     = Tungsten Graphics, Inc.
