I've found that the hangs often occur while playing ut2k4, but they
have also occurred at other times, when nothing exciting is
happening. Sometimes xscreensaver is running, but sometimes I'm just
moving the mouse or typing into a terminal window.

It is still possible that ut2k4 is to blame, of course, if running it
leaves the chip in some unstable state, and then the hangs I see at
other times are just a delayed manifestation of the problem. Does
that seem likely?
