Both. The XINPUT protocol looks like a somewhat unfinished work, and
was designed aroung the idea of dumb devices. As for XFree86, the XINPUT
server code has gotten mangled due to never having a real design doc.

Agreed. I'm just pointing out that X in general is much more hotplug
friendly than XFree86, and I was always annoyed that XFree86 would
ignore a device config if it didn't happen to be available when X started.

Yes, that's how it is, and that is definitely the wrong thing to do.

In my opinion, most or all PreInit code should be moded to DEVICE_INIT.
In fact, PreInit is probably not needed. It is trying to do what
DEVICE_INIT was always designed to do. PreInit mainly exists because
it was put there for video drivers. IMHO, it would make sense to use the
XINPUT concept for all drivers to have a single Control() function that
is sent DEVICE_INIT, DEVICE_ON, etc.

Why not go with the well-defined X method? Why have a PreInit() at all?

I think ASCII is good for most things, but I can think of cases where
binary is useful, such as a force feedback, or even program code for a
smart device.
The things I'm thinking of are more like custom device controls, rather
than things you would put into xorg.conf. The problem is that adding a
custom control type means adding an X protocol data description and
modifying the server. So, I'm thinking it would be good to add general
use control types that can handle more than just ASCII.

Well, I've never gotten involved in wiki, but this is certainly an ideal
case for wiki, since many people will have opinions about the best way
to do it.
