Trying to make sense of all the X modular packages

I was thinking the proto headers were required to build the X server, but
that nothing else in the core required those libraries, and not a lot of
external software does.  (I know xscreensaver does, and I guess I forgot
about xdpyinfo using them, which would make them core too.)
