Using DESTDIR during installation

Hi

Building and installing the proto/ and lib/ tree works quite well for
me - as long as I don't use DESTDIR
(make install DESTDIR=$RPM_BUILD_ROOT) - which is quite common for a
Linux distribution. pkgconfig files, headers and libs cannot be found
this way.

I tried to workaround the problems with things like setting
PKG_CONFIG_PATH and XPROTO_CFLAGS before running autogen.sh/configure
and making symlinks to the X11 include dir below $RPM_BUILD_ROOT
before running make, but I find this quite ugly. Is there a better way
to build the modular tree using DESTDIR?

BTW, it might be a good idea to document in which order the subdirs of
lib/ should be compiled. Of course you can figure this out easily by
trial and error ...

Best regards,
Stefan
