I'd forgotten about mpv.  It never worked well on the 890GX board.

mpv defaulted to gl and worked fine with that, vdpau or xv.

mplayer2 defaulted to gl, and with any of gl, vdpau or xv switched the
hdmi to match the source video (720p in the cases I tried) and worked
fine.

So it seems to be limited to mplayer.  [SIGH]
