[Dell Inspiron 6400] Laptop screen is turned off, needs shutdown to work again

It looks like the screen goes black because of an unrecoverable GPU
lockup. GPU lockups are usually caused by bugs in the userspace driver
components. Can you try narrowing down which userspace component is at
fault:

If

	Option	"EXANoComposite"

in xorg.conf works around the problem, please file a bug at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=xorg , component
Driver/Radeon.

If using a different desktop environment (preferably not using an OpenGL
compositing manager) works around the problem, please file a bug at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Mesa , component
Drivers/Gallium/r300.
