All along I've been using the vtwm window manager, not the fancy compiz.

I just tried using twm instead of vtwm; no improvement.

The desktop doesn't work across two cards with three monitors; the two monitors
on the first card have video crap on them.   The video crap changes a little
bit right at the top if I drag windows onto them from the working third
monitor, but they are otherwise useless (unless I invert them).
