Summary: Changing external monitors requires X restart
           Product: xorg
           Version: 7.5
          Platform: x86 (IA32)
        OS/Version: Linux (All)
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: medium
         Component: Driver/Radeon
        AssignedTo: xorg-driver-ati at lists.x.org
        ReportedBy: tim.holy at gmail.com
         QAContact: xorg-team at lists.x.org

Here is my current configuration:
Laptop: Thinkpad T60, with a 1400x1050 screen (4:3), ATI X1400 videocard
Home external monitor: Dell S2409W with 1920x1080 resolution (16:9)
Work external monitor: HP LP2065 with a 1600x1200 resolution (4:3)

Summary: If I start in one location (say, work) using the external monitor, and
then come home and try to connect to the other external monitor, it generally
requires an X restart.

The data below was collected using Kubuntu Lucid, but this problem first
started with Karmic and is still present (in some form or another) in the
Maverick daily live CD as of 2010-08-26 containing X version 7.5.

Suppose I start X with my work monitor connected, and then come home. Then
$ xrandr --auto
causes the home monitor to become activated (under Lucid; this appears to be an
improvement over Karmic, see the Ubuntu bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libxrandr/+bug/476357). However, the
resolutions are all wrong:
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1400 x 1050, maximum 1600 x 1600
VGA-0 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 531mm
x 298mm
   1280x1024 75.0* 60.0
   1152x864 75.0
   1024x768 75.0 60.0
   800x600 75.0 60.3
   640x480 75.0 59.9
   720x400 70.1
LVDS connected 1400x1050+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 285mm x
214mm
   1400x1050 60.0*+ 50.0
   1280x1024 59.9 60.0
   1280x960 59.9
   1280x854 59.9
   1280x800 59.8
   1280x720 59.9
   1152x768 59.8
   1024x768 60.0 59.9
   800x600 60.3 59.9
   640x480 59.9 59.4
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

If I try this:
$ xrandr --auto --output VGA-0 --mode 1920x1080
xrandr: cannot find mode 1920x1080

Note the physical size of VGA-0 appears correct, it just doesn't get the full
set of modes.

I'm pretty certain that trying this with the Maverick alpha live CD (X version
7.5) in the opposite direction (home->work) yielded the following error:
xrandr: cannot find crtc for output DVI-0
and the monitor did not even activate.

I'm happy to submit whatever logs you require, please specify what files you
need and which version you want me to run under (e.g., my harddrive-installed
Lucid or from a live CD). Note that the Ubuntu bug report I linked to above
contains some logs dating back to the version of X in Karmic. Also please
understand I can test this only at times when I'm transitioning from home to
work or vice versa.
