O.k., here are some more encouraging test results.  I now rebuilt the kernel with

The boot process now behaves a little strange, as the start screen first looks like hanging in OpenFirmware, but then briefly the text console comes up, and X starts.  Dmesg says

The strange effect in Xine is *completely* gone.  I didn't test yet if the text console is still inaccessible, but I think I can live with that.  Anything else you think I should check?
