I had the problem this morning by simply restarting the computer. I restarted
three times without effect, the fan just slows down while in console mode, and
then speeds up when Xserver starts. 
Then I opened a graphical session (using KDM) and then restarted the X server
with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and the fan slowed down enough to be as quiet as usual.
