Indeed, when removing these two options both compiz and ut2004demo run
nicely. On the hunt for further problems, I've discovered that
pdfcube ( http://code.100allora.it/pdfcube/ )
is somehow not in the very front and flickering like hell...
Otherwise I am surprised how well everything works!!
