Debugging GPU lockups is tricky. Often one can only try and narrow down
the cause.

If you could narrow down which of the upgrade of kernel,
xserver-xorg-core (unlikely), xserver-xorg-video-ati or libgl1-mesa-dri
introduced the problem for you, that would still be very valuable
information.

Otherwise, if the problem really only occurs with compiz but not with
metacity, it's more likely due to libgl1-mesa-dri or the DRM kernel
modules than due to xserver-xorg-video-ati.

It might be interesting if you could try newer kernels or even an
upstream drm Git snapshot. Some other lockup problems turned out to be
fixed there already, see e.g.
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17075 .
