dpkg refuses to install in case of a conflict without --force-<thing>.
Furthermore the conflicts then have to resolved manually. Not always easy!

Did not work (for a downgrade) probably because there are additional
packages to downgrade due to dependencies or conflicts. There were
conflicts against a virtual xserver-xorg-video-1.9 that was blocking
apt-get (or aptitude). I used the option `-o
Debug::pkgProblemResolver=true' of apt-get but the output was too
cryptic to help understand the blocking. It could be something wrong
with my configuration that made the downgrade be refused. With a little
luck I finally was able to downgrade without forcing dpkg by choosing to
downgrade xserver-xorg-core first to a chosen appropriate version.

I thought there might be something like `apt-get --downgrade install <pkg>=<version>' that would work well by allowing as many packages downgraded as required to install a specific version.

I just forgot to send it to the bug log (I should use reply to all I
guess) so I also sent it there in a subsequent mail.

I finished tested the versions of snapshot.debian.net.

The oversized screen problem has been introduced between versions
6.6.193-3 and 6.7.191-1. The size 1280x1024_60.00 works with my screen
but was apparently not reported to work before.
