I tried xserver-xorg-video-radeon 6.9.0 but it did not fix the problem. But 
downgrading xserver-xorg-core to version 2:1.4.1~git20080517-2 fixed it! I 
think that was the version I had before, since I use unstable. I had the 
newest version 2:1.4.2-1 when it did not work.

Here is the output from xrandr when it did not work correctly (with 6.9.0 and 
1.4.2):
