I recently upgraded to latest git master ATI:

[moz at pent xf86-video-ati]$ git log | more
commit 10e7636c02478b8ffe183bb0c46229ca0d6584e1

Date:   Wed Jan 9 12:47:39 2008 -0500

and using DRI in xscreensaver locks the machine (I can
still sysrq-reboot, but that's it).

My base OS is Fedora 8, see attached Xorg.0.log.
