I tried setting vblank_mode to 2 or 3 in my .drirc, but I still get tear (note
that while glxgears drops to ~60fps, the compiz benchmark still shows a lot
higher fps).

Also the 'Unredirect fullscreen windows' option in compiz did not help even in
fullscreen mode.
