Did you try to use the DRM module? What I forgot to write; I had no problems at
all with older X versions, this appeared only a few months ago after upgrading
to the latest Xorg from Debian Unstable. I had never needed reduced blanking, on
the contrary I used a modeline with 170 MHz pixel clock at 1600x1200 for years
with this screen and card.
I'm using OpenOffice.org all day right currently and I haven't had a single
issue since "modprobe radeon".
