Bug#437321: much improved but still unusable with 1:6.7.197-1 and DRI enabled

I'd like to dust off this bug report ... with xserver-xorg-video-ati
1:6.7.197-1 and linux-image-2.6.22-3-686 2.6.22-6 the situation is
much improved but I still can't get 3D acceleration. By default, the
driver declines to enable DRI; with no xorg.conf I get

(II) RADEON(0): Direct rendering not officially supported on RN50/RC410

and it works correctly, except of course for not doing accelerated
OpenGL. If I force it to enable DRI in xorg.conf, then upon starting
X, I see the initial gray stipple pattern over the bottom two-thirds
of the screen. The top third of the screen is garbled. No further
display updates occur; however, the cursor shows up, is responsive to
the mouse, and changes shape appropriately (e.g. from arrow to I-beam
when over where the gdm login box ought to be). I can
ctrl-alt-backspace out of X, which does not recover the console, but I
can blind-type a reboot. I suspect that the gdm reboot menu would also
work, but I can't do that blind.

I'm attaching: Xorg.0.log.old is the server log with DRI enabled;
Xorg.0.log is the server log with DRI default-disabled; and
xorg.conf.dis is the xorg.conf I am using to force DRI on.

I will try again with 2.6.23 and report whether that helps. Also, in
January I might actually have time to try experimental drivers.
