OK.  I'm still waiting to see what happens with DPMS off.  So far, that
seems to be the culprit (I just left it alone for about 30 minutes).

I believe it first happened to me two days ago.  Looking at the qa page,
it seems then that it isn't strictly xserver-xorg-video-ati (it's been
around a while).  Guess that means I have more work to do!  Thanks.
