The old Xaw3d-1.5 used imake, and the new 1.6 uses autotools, so we
didn't realize that internationalization was on-by-default with the
old version.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I released libXaw3d-1.6
upstream. I added 1.6 to Gentoo. I fielded a couple of bug reports
Samuli filed in the Gentoo and FreeDesktop bugzillas. I sent two
patches in response.

I don't understand what we're going round and round about.

Maybe the lesson should simply be don't bother users of unmaintained
software so quickly after finding problems in a new release.
