But Xaw3d has been packaged in various places all along.
Lack of involvement by xorg hackers doesn't bear into the matter.
Linux is irrelevant as well in this discussion.

For instance, I see in a quick check the Darwin and FreeBSD ports
as well as NetBSD (pkgsrc) and Solaris (opencsw and sunfreeware).

What is relevant is providing a new version of a long-used
package which drops a major part of its functionality by default.

That only leads to bug reports (and sadly, xorg hackers as a rule
are not proactive in this area, generally expecting everyone who has an
issue to come _here_).
